Production Status of european Hatcheries

We were extremely pleased with the great level of interest in the recent webinar with nearly 300 registrations and 180 participants. This shows that the issue of shrimp breeding is of real importance to the European shrimp community.

Over the webinar’s three hours, we heard – thanks to the informative presentations of the speakers – a lot about production capacities, delivery status and plans of several European Hatcheries. While some are taking orders, others are still ramping up their production and are producing for their own needs for the time being. Furthermore, we learned that besides the most cultivated Shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, another promising candidate in shrimp aquaculture, L. stylirostris is being bred and cultivated in Europe.

In addition to the breeders, scientists and producers are also advancing the breeding and rearing of shrimp in Europe. At Ghent University, scientists are working on protocols, which are specially adapted to the requirements of shrimp breeding in Europe. Unfortunately, these breeding protocols will only be published after the end of the trials, so we have to be patient until we can get hold of them!

Special thanks also to Bert Wecker from the company Förde Garnele, for providing a thorough and insightful protocol that deals with the adaptation of post larvae in recirculating aquaculture systems. This publication is freely available via Euroshrimp. This protocol, and the deep insight into Förde Garnele production provided, are essential reading and illustrate the influence that origin and transport duration of the post larvae can have on the later growth in recirculation systems.
